Foster named chair of ACM SIGPLAN
Professor and Associate Department Chair Jeffrey Foster has been elected chair of the Association for Computing Machinery’s (ACM) Special Interest Group on Programming Languages (SIGPLAN). His term will be from July 1, 2021 through June 30, 2024. Foster has been an executive committee member of SIGPLAN since 2018.
The ACM, a learned society for computing, was founded in 1947 and is the world’s largest scientific and educational computing society. The ACM has over 171 local chapters and 37 Special Interest Groups (SIGs), of which SIGPLAN is one. SIGPLAN is a special interest group focusing on programming languages and sponsors four of the highest profile conferences in programming languages each year.
Foster received his PhD in Computer Science at the University of California at Berkeley in 2002. He was a faculty member at University of Maryland, College Park for more than 15 years before joining the Tufts Department of Computer Science in 2018. In 2020, he received the Most Influential POPL Paper Award at the ACM SIGPLAN-SIGACT Symposium on Principles of Programming Languages (POPL). Foster’s area of research is in programming languages, software engineering, security, system design and development.
